Western New York &
Pennsylvania Railroad/Railway

History

The Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad was formed on February 14, 1883 from the consolidation of the Buffalo, New York and Philadelphia Railway, the Buffalo, Pittsburgh & Western, the Olean and Salamanca Railroad, and the Oil City and Chicago Railroad.

The company went into receivership in 1885 and in 1887 was sold at foreclosure and broken into the Western New York and Pennsylvania Railway Company of New York and the Western New York and Pennsylvania Railway Company of Pennsylvania.  These two companies were merged on March 18, 1895 to form the Western New York and Pennsylvania Railway Company.

The Western New York and Pennsylvania Railway operated independently until July 31, 1900 when the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) assumed operational control over the railroad.
