The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) was one of the largest and most influential railroads in American history and had many lines in Western New York.  The Buffalo Line extended from Emporium, PA north to Buffalo.  This line is still used by the Norfolk Southern Railroad.

History

The Buffalo and Allegheny Valley Rail Road Company was chartered on May 30, 1853 and the Buffalo and Washington Rail Road Company was established on February 7, 1865.  These two companies merged on December 11, 1865 to form the Buffalo and Washington Railway Company (of 1865).

This company merged with the Sinnemahoning Portage Railroad Company in Pennsylvania on October 3, 1866 to form the Buffalo and Washington Railway Company (of 1865). On April 12, 1871 the company changed its name to the Buffalo, New York and Philadelphia Railway Company. in 1883 the Buffalo, New York and Philadelphia Railway was consolidated into the Buffalo, New York and Philadelphia Railroad which was acquired by the Western New York and Pennsylvania Railway in September 1887. Beginning on July 31, 1990 the WNYP was operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad.
