From it's days as the connection between the Erie Railroad and the Atlantic & Great Western Railway, Salamanca, NY was an important point on the Erie Railroad. There were passenger and freight stations, a very large yard and an engine terminal with, at one point, two roundhouses.

This July 1947 photograph shows Erie Railroad locomotive 3399 out for a spin on the turntable. Notice the extensive yards stretching to the west. The 3399 was an S4 class 2-8-4 locomotive built by Lima in 1929 for the Erie. The photo was taken by the Erie Railroad and is part of the "Historic American Engineering Record" collection at the Library of Congress. I have a much higher resolution and larger file (1.2 MB) of this image available as well.

This 1971 photograph shows the same area, including the remains of the turntable and roundhouse. It was taken by photographer Jack Boucher as part of the Historic American Engineering Record and is in the collection of the Library of Congress. I have a much higher resolution and larger file (1.7 MB) of this image available as well.
