Facts and Figures Taken from the Report of the State Commissioners

The second volume of the report of the railroad commissioners of the state of New York for the year ending Sept. 30, 1888, has been received. It contains tabulated statements and reports of all the railways operated in the state.

In regard to the Chautauqua Lake railway it is found that there are 19 stock holders and 6,000 of the 8,000 shares of capital stock authorized, now outstanding. The funded debt outstanding amounts to $512,250. The total coot of road and equipment is $1,134,081 71. The gross earnings during the year were $40,482 54; operating expenses $44,288.88, leaving a deficit from this source of $3,806 43. Adding to this the interest on debt, rentals. and taxes $30,748.51. leaves a total deficit of $34,554 85. Adding to this the deficit of 1887, $14,011 40, and the indebtedness of the road from the excess of expenditure above income is $48,566.25.

The income from passengers last year was $26,731.00; from freight $12,808 08. From the post office department the road received $386 71 for carrying the mails, and from the American express company $1,056 80 for service. There were 15,657 through passengers and 54,850 local passengers, and 16,180 loads of freight transported. The road paid the W.,N.Y. & P. for track service from Mayville to Brocton lost year $5.873.19

The main track of the road from Jamestown to the junction of The W. N. Y. & P is 21.17 miles long. It also owns and operates a branch road from Mayville to Chautauqua 2.68 miles long. There are 2.24 miles of siding and turnouts along the road. All of the main line is laid with steel rail.

The following facts concerning the Jamestown street railroad are gathered from the same report: The total length of all track and sidings is four and thirty-four thousands miles; length of main line 3.278 miles. The cost of the horses owned is $5,222.75; of the cars $8,396 05. The betterments last year amounted to $631.74 for equipment anti on the road bed, rails, etc., $633.64. The total cost of road and equipment to Sept 30, 1888. was $50,874 01. The total income of the year was $10,411 62. The yearly operating expenses were $7,087 08. This includes repairs, horse feed, etc., as well as salaries and wages. Deducting taxes and interest on the funded debt, loss on sale of horses and deficit of year last leaves a total surplus at the end of the fiscal year ear of $229.43. There were carried in the cars during the year 202,568 passengers. The capital stock of the road is $100.000 and the funded debt $25,000.
