Lakewood, New York

Lakewood is a small village approximately five railroad miles west of Jamestown on the Erie Railroad main line. In addition to the Erie, Lakewood was served by local streetcar lines as well. In 1893 the Jamestown Street Railway Company extended its lines to serve the village as well. Lakewood was also a station on the Chautauqua Traction Company line between Westfield and Jamestown. Lakewood grew almost entirely as a resort town and was one of the premier Western New York resort areas.

This undated postcard shows the front of the Lakewood passenger station on the Erie Railroad.  The trolley cars on the left are those of the Chautauqua Traction Company which operated lines within Jamestown and the surrounding area.  Passengers arriving from Ohio and other points to the west would board the trolley cars at Lakewood and ride to their summer vacation homes on Chautauqua Lake.

The photo above show the Erie Railroad passenger station at Lakewood in approximately 1909. This photo is of the front of the station and is taken from the opposite direction as the postcard view above. Notice the pantograph wires for the trolley cars in front of the station. The photo is from the glass plate negative collection at Syracuse University.
